Potter’s Wheel

In the summer we introduced several of our young people to an art workshop outdoors at the Raveningham Estate in Norfolk. When the young people watched a demonstration of how to make a clay bowl using a rapidly spinning wheel (with wet clay flying everywhere) they looked as daunted as they were intrigued. After a few minutes the competitive spirit of two young people (life-long friends and flat mates) took over and they sat next to each other, giggling like small children ready for the challenge. Over the course of two hours or so all of our young people moulded clay pots with expert tuition from artist in residence Sarah Cannell. Our YPs did not want to leave the hot seat and they showed their natural flair for clay work in short time. We were surprised to see the change in confidence so quickly, with artistic credentials emerging with the sound of laughter all around.
